The Academic Senate convened for its fourth meeting of the year on July 25th, and here are the top five takeaways that you need to know:
1. Review of the Special Consideration Policy
For effect immediately, we’ve clarified the circumstances under which special consideration can be granted, potential outcomes, rules for supportive evidence required and we’ve removed the COVID-19 exceptions. For implementation in S3 2023 we’ve removed the “fit to sit” clause, with the revised policy clearer in explaining that only under exceptional circumstances will someone who has already submitted an assessment or sat for an examination be considered for a second opportunity. Changes regarding automatic extensions are still be considered.
2. Assessment Policy and Procedure: Post-implementation Review
After a comprehensive review and feedback period, a number of amendments have been made to the policy and procedure including guidelines around specifying resources in task descriptions, standardising submission times and late penalties and requiring the release of grades/marks prior to finalising unit marks.
3. Academic Integrity Policy: Clearer Definitions
With immediate effect, Academic Senate approved changes to the policy and procedure that have redefined “cheating” and added specifics like “unauthorised use of generative AI” and “unauthorised file sharing” with the goal of enhanced student awareness of academic expectations.
4. Course Reaccreditation: Quality Assurance
Academic Senate reaccredited several courses, ensuring that they meet high quality standards.
Faculty of Arts:
- Bachelor of Philosophy/Master of Research
- Bachelor of Security Studies
- Master’s Degrees in Counter Terrorism, Criminology, Cyber Security, Intelligence, Security, Strategic Studies, Media, and Creative Industries
Macquarie Business School:
- Master of Commerce
Faculty of Science and Engineering:
- Applied Statistics and Environment-related degrees
5. Admission Pathways Review Report: Fairness and Success
The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) shared a report on Admission Pathways. Key highlights include the growing popularity of early entry schemes like the Macquarie Leaders and Achievers (MLA) program and the strong performance of students entering through these routes. The review emphasised ongoing efforts to ensure the entry process is fair and equitable.
A number of other polices are now under review, so keep an eye out for providing feedback on the Bulletin Board:
- Curriculum Architecture Policy;
- Course Transfer Policy;
- Higher Degree Research Rules;
- Research Training Program Scholarships Policy;
- Student Disability Support Policy/Procedure; and
- Death of a Student or Staff Procedure.
